But as an archipelago of over 7,000 islands, there are actually plenty of other places in the Philippines that you can visit and explore. Avoid crowds and the bustle of highly popular tourist spots and enjoy more tranquil atmospheres by visiting some of the lesser-known travel destinations in the Philippines that are truly worth discovering. 

1. Caramoan

The islands of Caramoan are blessed with majestic white sand beaches, charming lakes, deep caves, and rich marine biodiversity. It is also home to a 4,000-hectare limestone forest that is just as breathtaking as the limestones found in the more popular El Nido. The raw natural beauty and pristine beaches of Caramoan make it perfect for activities like island hopping, kayaking, scuba diving, spelunking, and more.

 

2. Batanes

It may be the smallest province in the Philippines but there’s a lot of things to see and do in Batanes that make it a must-visit destination. There are many postcard-worthy sights to see in this hidden gem such as gorgeous rolling hills and pristine beaches, which is why it’s one of the best places for destination weddings in the Philippines.  As the northernmost group of islands in the country, Batanes also enjoys refreshing windy weather which earned it the nickname “Home of the Winds.”

If an adrenaline rush is what you’re looking for, then you should definitely consider visiting Cagayan de Oro, or as most locals call it, CDO. This province is a great go-to place for extreme sports especially whitewater rafting, the most popular activity in CDO. Other activities that will satisfy adventure-seekers include river tubing, ziplining, and paragliding. More relaxing options are also available like swimming in white sand beaches, kayaking, and sightseeing.

Iloilo is an excellent destination for experiential travelers who love to engage in a place’s culture, history, and food. Here, there are museums that showcase remnants of the country’s colonial past, as well as stately Western-inspired mansions and century-old churches. Famous Ilonggo dishes like La Paz Batchoy and Chicken Inasal are also a must-try when you visit this province. Its strategic location also makes it a gateway to other provinces nearby including Boracay and Palawan.

Its famous Chocolate Hills and selection of pristine beaches may have already put Bohol on the map but there are lots of other attractions on the island that really deserve your attention like its enchanting caves, lush forests, and breathtaking waterfalls. Bohol is also known as a prime destination for eco-tourism where you can enjoy sustainable activities like visiting tarsier sanctuaries and butterfly conservation centers, firefly watching, spelunking, and trekking.

Just a 3- to 4-hour drive away from Metro Manila, the beautiful province of Pangasinan is a great destination option when it comes to quick getaways and spontaneous escapes. The province’s most popular destination is the Hundred Islands National Park where tourists can go island-hopping and enjoy activities like swimming, snorkeling, cliff jumping, and camping. Other must-see attractions in Pangasinan include historical churches, gorgeous waterfalls, and cave pools.

 

7. Dumaguete

One of the best places to live in the Philippines, Dumaguete is more popularly known for being a university town and an ideal retirement place. But this city on Negros island also makes a perfect travel destination for easy-going seaside vacations. Also known as the “Mystic Island of Central Visayas”, Siquijor is a destination where one can bask in tranquility, away from the cacophony of the metro. The island is home to unspoiled wonders like white sandy beaches, beautiful cascades, and marine sanctuaries. During the colonial era, the Spaniards called Siquijor “Isla de Fuegos” which translates to “Island of Fire” because of the numerous fireflies on the island that give Siquijor an ethereal appeal come nighttime.

Antique is a must-visit for travelers who love laid-back countryside escapes. A paradise for nature lovers, the province is home to beautiful beaches, untouched rainforests, stunning waterfalls, and breathtaking panoramic views. Some must-do activities and unique experiences to enjoy in Antique include having a hot spa bath in a cauldron heated by wood fire, relaxing in one of the most beautiful sandbars in the Philippines, and water tubing in what is considered by many as the cleanest river in the country.

Davao City is already popular among locals and tourists alike, but there are other provinces in the region where you can experience enjoyable tropical escapes. One of these provinces is Davao Oriental. Here, you can find Dahican Beach in Mati which is perhaps one of the most beautiful beaches in the Philippines and is definitely a must-visit for surf enthusiasts and beach lovers. Davao Oriental is also home to the tallest waterfall in the country – the majestic Aliwagwag Falls.
