Quickly developing into a booming travel destination, Siargao Island is actually an archipelago in the Philippines encompassing about 169 square miles across 9 municipalities. Siargao began its journey towards worldwide popularity due to its high variety of wave-inducing reefs, resulting in a strong surfing culture and appeal. While surfing introduced the world to Siargao, the island’s paradise-like environment is what has kept its consistent visitor growth.
Surfing Capital of the Philippines
Siargao’s surfing culture is mainly concentrated on the coastlines of General Luna and Pilar municipalities, due to the high variety of surf breaks found here year round, although at their peak during the southwest monsoon. Many tourists solely come to catch some amazing waves, — particularly Cloud 9, which is ranked among the top ten surf breaks in the world!
Locals are laid-back and certainly enjoy partaking in recreational surfing. The island has multiple services that facilitate an excellent surfing experience, such as surfboard rental and purchasing shops, motorcycle rentals with surfboard racks and small affordable boats that take surfers to offshore breaks.
Siargao’s Diverse Geography
Blessed with abundant natural resources and picturesque scenery, such as widespread vegetation, turquoise waters filled with large fish, areas packed with palm trees and coconuts, endless white-sand beaches and abundant wildlife, Siargao is steadily attracting more global attention as a top resort destination for travel enthusiasts, not just surfers.
Siargao is home to the Philippines’s largest mangrove forest reserves, located in Del Carmen municipality. There are tons of activities in which one can partake in this area alone, such as wildlife tours and kayaking through the forest. Countless other attractions have developed all over Siargao, on account of the rapid tourism increase in recent years.
To get to Siargao, you can get on a direct flight from Cebu City or connecting flight from Manila with a brief stop in Cebu City. These flights have only been recently established due to rapidly growing demand.
